Cell phones

Seems like people change cell phones around here more often than their socks. Got another notice today from a friend. Of course, he has changed jobs recently.

And I can't find my mechanipencil to write it down in my
address book.

You think I'm going to write a cell phone number down in ink?

Am still resisting getting my own cell phone. Why do I want to spoil my meals with one?

End of history? Oops! maybe I was premature.

http://zenit.org

Remember the guy who, after the fall of the Berlin wall, declared the end of history? Well, now he's backtracking a bit. Zenit has an interview with him in their Weekly News Analysis for Sept. 7. I can't link to it since they use frames, but you'll find it.

Is he for real, or just out to make a buck?

My Feeble Efforts

Hmm, no poetry posted lately. So here's a couplet to savor, or gnaw on, whichever suits your internal combustion state:

My Feeble Efforts

My feeble efforts fall far short, so fast;
God laces them with grace to make them last.

Bad storm last night

Was supposed to be a cold front, but turned out to be a wind and rain front. Did a lot of damage. Caved in a neighbor's garage roof and damaged two of his vehicles. Lots of signs and tree limbs down around town. I was concerned, because my office had leaked last Monday night. But there was slight leakage around some of the windows, and no damage.

I had also left the computers plugged in, but there was no lightning damage. When the first wave of two hit about 1:30 a.m., it was a continuous roll of thunder mixed with spetacular flashes of lightning.

When the second wave hit (after a complete calm, reminding me of what I'd read about hurricanes), I unplugged what little had been left, among the appliances was the refrigerator. This morning it wouldn't run, so we figured we'd lost this 18-year-old antique. As it turned out, the 110 volts wasn't working in the neighborhood, but the 220 was. (Our city is 220, but we have some 110 plugs to service appliances brought from Belo Horizonte.)

Final result: we came out of this smelling like a (wet) rose. Not everyone was so fortunate.

A journalist's goal

Here's a quote by Joseph Pulitzer, yes, of the Prize:

"Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light."

This came from the AhQuotes list.
