Lunch time

Vicki and I had lunch out together at a little self-service place a couple of blocks away from my office. They know how to use seasonings and really enhance the flavors of the foods. Best of all, it's R$0,99 per 100 gr., or about 40 cents U.S. They charge a little higher for the juices and drinks, so we got away paying about US $4.20.

A little farther away is the vegetarian restaurant where I often eat. Their price is a little higher, but the juice is included, so I usually come away even cheaper, always under two bucks.

A lot cheaper, and a whole lot better, than McDs. I think one of their specials is now about US $2.50.

To Kill Temptation

by Randal Matheny

Temptation stalks its prey and springs
To kill the holy by surprise;
If chained, this beast no longer sings
Of death, but lies exposed and dies.

I noticed that

I've weighed in heavily on the poetry lately, so after just one more, I'll give you a break from the rhyme and meter. Not that I've been particularly inspired recently, since several of the posts need revision, one rather badly.

Heaven Help Me

by Randal Matheny

Heaven help me keep away from sinning!
Seven angel legions march toward winning
battles flesh has always failed to master.
Godly spirits rush against a vaster
host than humankind could ever muster.
No temptation can, for all its luster,
draw me far from God's protective cover.
Swords aflaming, servant cherubs hover
round about, repulsing every volley
fired to kindle sinful melancholy.
Knees bow down to God's complete safe-keeping,
Pleas convert to praise and joy from weeping.

Just finished this gem this morning. And I'm off to Sao Paulo today to meet with our magazine's editor. See you later in the day!

Be docile

I enjoy the daily word from MerriamWebster. You can subscribe at the link below, if you like. Here's today's word:

The Word of the Day for May 16 is:

docile \DAH-sul or DAH-syle\ (adjective)
1 : easily taught
*2 : easily led or managed : tractable

Example sentence: Peabody was such a good-natured, docile horse that even the youngest children could ride him.

Did you know?

"Docile" students can make teaching a lot easier. Nowadays, calling students "docile" indicates they aren't trouble-makers. But there's more than just good behavior connecting docility to teachability. The original meaning of "docile" is more to the point: "readily absorbing something taught." "The docile mind may soon thy precepts know," rendered Ben Jonson, for example, in a 17th-century translation of the Greek poet Horace. "Docile" comes from Latin "docere," which means "to teach." Other "docere" descendants include "doctrine" (which can mean "something that is taught"), "document" (the earliest meaning of which was "instruction"), and "doctor" and "docent" (both of which can refer to college teachers).

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.
